Another day, another denial about Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment Ltd. buying an English football team.

"Pure fiction," said MLSEL president and CEO Richard Peddie yesterday, when asked about a story the Leafs are in talks to purchase Leeds United.

The link between the Leafs and the third division team was made in the British paper Sunday Mirror during the weekend.

Peddie, who made an exploratory trip to watch games in England with the company's chief financial officer Ian Clarke in April, already has shot down a report the company was going to pay $504 million to acquire Premier League team Tottenham Hotspur.

"I have some autonomy to spend the board's money, but not $500 million," Peddie said.

Peddie did meet with officials from some clubs during his trip, including Southampton and Reading, but has stressed throughout that he was only on a fact-finding mission.

Leeds chairman Ken Bates refused to comment on whether any discussions had taken place with the Toronto-based company.
