The Vancouver Whitecaps will meet the Portland Timbers again on Friday to begin the United Soccer Leagues' First Division playoffs.

Seventh-place Vancouver, the defending champion, tied Portland 0-0 last night at Swangard Stadium in the final game of the USL regular season.

The Whitecaps were stymied time and again by ex-Vancouver goalkeeper Josh Wicks and the Timbers' defense. The 'Caps (9-7-12) finished with 27 goals for, second worst in the league.

The Whitecaps missed a chance to finish fourth after they allowed the Atlanta Silverbacks an 88th minute goal and 1-1 tie on Friday. The Seattle Sounders edged the Minnesota Thunder 1-0 to take first place overall yesterday.

Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Galaxy postponed the Oct. 3 exhibition game against the Whitecaps at B.C. Place Stadium because of David Beckham's knee sprain. The game will be played sometime in November. Ticketholders unable to make the new date can seek refunds by contacting the Whitecaps.
