David Beckham's Canadian debut is in jeopardy.
The injured English star midfielder is scheduled to lead Major League Soccer's Los Angeles Galaxy against the Vancouver Whitecaps in an Oct. 3 B.C. Place Stadium exhibition game. More than 45,000 tickets have been sold.
The Galaxy announced Thursday that Beckham is sidelined for six weeks with a right knee ligament sprain suffered in Wednesday's SuperLiga final loss to Pachuca of Mexico.
Whitecaps president Bob Lenarduzzi said the game could be postponed, but it would not be cancelled. Lenarduzzi said he is waiting for a checkup on Beckham this week before deciding to reschedule.
"They're looking forward to playing here in 2007," Lenarduzzi said. "They're going to fulfil their commitment."
If Oct. 3 is scuttled, the next opportunity could be late October. The last-place, 3-10-5 Galaxy end the regular season Oct. 21. B.C. Place's calendar shows four vacant days in the last week of October.
L.A. is also scheduled to play a to-be-determined international team at Minneapolis' Metrodome in an Oct. 10 game promoted by the USL's Minnesota Thunder.
