BURNABY, B.C. - Vancouver Whitecaps' club record winless streak extended to nine games Thursday when they drew 1-1 with Puerto Rico Islanders in USL First Division soccer.

Whitecaps trailed after Islander Fabrice Noel's 63rd minute shot from the penalty arc beat goalkeeper Richard Goddard. Vancouver was playing shorthanded after Brazilian midfielder Ze Roberto left his Whitecaps' debut with a cut to the head.

Alfredo Valente, a 67th minute substitute for Vancouver, banked a shot off the inside post in the 77th minute for the tying goal. Whitecap Tony Donatelli nearly scored the winner on a header in injury time, but Puerto Rico goalkeeper Josh Saunders deflected the ball off the goalpost.

The draw didn't settle anything. The 7-4-9 Islanders remain fifth place, a point ahead of 7-6-8 Vancouver in USL First Division standings. Whitecaps' winless streak began with a scoreless tie June 24 in Bayamon, Puerto Rico. Vancouver's last win was 1-0 over Miami FC on June 22.

Vancouver plays its final road game Aug. 11 in Portland against the Timbers. The club ends the regular season with a six-game homestand, starting Aug. 12 against the Minnesota Thunder.
