It's the eighth month of the calendar and the Vancouver Whitecaps want to end their eight-game winless streak tonight when Puerto Rico Islanders visit Swangard Stadium (7 p.m., team1040.ca, ShawTV, usllive.com).
It'll be a key matchup to begin USL First Division's final full month of the regular season. The Islanders (7-4-8) have a one-point edge on Vancouver (7-6-7). The Whitecaps' winless streak started June 24 in Puerto Rico with a scoreless draw. They have since lost five times.
Meanwhile, the Whitecaps have sold 40,000 tickets to the Oct. 3 friendly against Major League Soccer's David Beckham and Los Angeles Galaxy. If Beckham's ankle injury keeps him out of Sunday's visit to Toronto FC, the B.C. Place Stadium date could be the English superstar's first match in Canada.
Toronto fans won't get refunds, but Vancouverites could if Beckham can't play this fall.
Whitecaps' president Bob Lenarduzzi and Galaxy head coach Frank Yallop both said in April that the match would be postponed if Beckham can't play.
