Champs could miss playoffs

Playoff hopes are fading fast for the 2006 W-League champion Vancouver Whitecaps.

The Whitecaps were 2-1 losers at home to the Seattle Crossfire Sounders on Saturday after suffering a 4-1 loss to the San Diego SunWaves Wednesday in Southern California.

The Whitecaps need the Real Colorado Cougars to beat Seattle on Thursday or the Fort Collins Force to beat San Diego on Friday. Then the Whitecaps would need to beat Fort Collins in Vancouver's final regular season game at Swangard Stadium on Saturday and ultimately wait for the result of yesterday's San Diego versus Seattle match to determine whether they qualify for post-season play.

If the math doesn't add-up in favour of the blue and white, it would be the first playoff absence for Vancouver. The top women's soccer club north of Mexico last summer is missing core players to Canada's Women's World Cup residency program.

n Meanwhile, the Whitecaps men were also 2-1 losers on Saturday to Miami FC. It was Vancouver's third straight loss. Zinho and Sean Fraser beat Whitecaps' goalkeeper Richard Goddard in his home debut with second half goals. Vancouver's only marker was in the third minute by Jason Jordan, who scored for the first time since August 2005.

The Whitecaps visit the Portland Timbers on Thursday.
