Austria needed a win

Austria would have preferred to have three points in their pocket heading into their game against Canada on Thursday.

But they'll have to settle for the one earned last night in a 1-1 tie with Congo.

The tie means Austria is in a must-win situation against Canada if it plans to make it past the group stage of the Under-20 World Cup.

"We're going to enjoy playing against Canada in front of a big crowd," said Austrian midfielder Zlatko Junuzovic through an interpreter. "This will inspire our team playing in that atmosphere. We want to get those three points (for a win) to get to the next round."

Canada and Austria have never met at the Under-20 level.

With Canada having lost their opening game against Chile and Austria having to settle for one point, both are expected to go for the victory when they meet in the first game of a double-header (5:45 p.m.) at Commonwealth Stadium.

"I think if we play against Canada the same way we did in the first half against Congo (yesterday), I think we'll have a lot of confidence going into that game," Junuzovic said. "We saw the first half of the Canadians game against Chile. The Chileans put a lot of pressure on Canada and Canada tried to get something going on the counter-attack. So we're going to try to put as much pressure on Canada as Chile did."

If the Austrians fail to earn all three points against Canada on Thursday, they'll probably be forced to beat Chile in their final round-robin game on Sunday to earn enough points to get through to the next round.

"We know that Chile is the favourite team to win the group," Junuzovic said.

"But I thought (last night) we saw two strong teams. We were strong in the first half and Congo was strong in the second half. I think it'll come down to those last games to see what teams go through to the next round."
