Gjertsen scores the winning goal to help Whitecaps blank Lynx 2-0

TORONTO (CP) - Joey Gjertsen scored the winning goal for the second game in a row to help the Vancouver Whitecaps blank the Toronto Lynx 2-0 Saturday night.

Alfredo Valente's high cross from the left was weakly palmed by Toronto goalkeeper Theo Zagar while challenging Jeff Clarke for the ball. It fell to Gjertsen 10 yards out, and he blasted a rising shot into the far side of the net at the 45-minute mark.

New signing Sita-Taty Matondo also scored for the Whitecaps after 82 minutes.

Vancouver Goalkeeper Josh Wicks picked up his second consecutive shutout, making three saves on eight shots.

Toronto's best chances came in the second half, but Wicks was solid in the Vancouver goal. At 53 minutes he held a long hard shot from Marko Bedenikovic, then snared a header from Tony Menezes off a corner kick 72 minutes in.
