KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Angela Hucles scored in the 36th minute to lead the U.S. women’s national team over Mexico 1-0 Saturday.

The Americans improved to 5-0 on their “Fan Appreciation Tour“ after winning Olympic gold this summer in Athens. Team mainstays Mia Hamm, Julie Foudy and Joy Fawcett plan to retire from international play after the tour.

The Americans created several scoring chances in the first half, and Hucles scored by deflecting Aly Wagner’s cross past goalkeeper Pamela Tajonar. The goal was Hucles’ fifth in 41 international appearances.

Mexico midfielder Dioselina Valderrama appeared to score in the 74th minute but was ruled offside. The Mexicans wore red training shirts without numbers instead of their traditional green shirts because of a misunderstanding about which shirts the United States would wear.

The game was the first of a doubleheader, preceding the Major League Soccer game between Kansas City and Los Angeles. The U.S. team continues its tour Wednesday in Chicago against Ireland.
