Ski cross is the only new event on the 2010 Winter Olympics' menu.

International Olympic Committee's executive board recommended yesterday in Kuwait City that VANOC add ski cross. Women's ski jumping and mixed doubles curling were among six rejected proposals.

VANOC's board could rubber-stamp ski cross as soon as January.

Ski cross features four skiers racing simultaneously on the same run used for snowboard cross, which debuted at the 2006 Games in Torino. It's expected there would be 32 male and 16 female competitors vying for medals at West Vancouver's Cypress Mountain in 2010.

Canada doesn't have a national team yet, but Canadian Freestyle Ski Association chief executive officer Peter Judge hopes to start one this winter. Cypress will host a freestyle world cup tour stop in February 2008.

"It will be a great addition to the Games, it's a very exciting sport, very dynamic," Judge said.

Ski cross is known as Skier X in ESPN's Winter X-Games. Last January in Aspen, Colo., Whistler's Ashleigh McIvor was the top Canadian woman, placing seventh. Davey Barr of Whistler finished 13th in men's races.

"The IOC has been very clever in recognizing that demographics out there are shifting and in order to stay relevant they need to make some changes to the programming," Judge said.
