YURKIW MAKES DEVELOPMENT SKI TEAM

Larisa Yurkiw, a top Ontario-born skier, has made the Canadian national development ski team after a try-out session, it was announced this past week.

Yurkiw took part in tryouts that started last June. She will head out to Calgary Nov. 6 for more dryland training.

"It was never a question of if she would make the team, but when," said Jean-Sebastien Labrie, Ontario women's team coach. Scott Barrett, Nick Zoricic, Jennah Durham and Megan Ryley are other Ontario-born skiers on the team.

RUGBY HALL OF FAME

Four members of the Ontario rugby community will be inducted into the Rugby Ontario Hall of Fame Nov. 26 for their contributions to the sport.

Hedley Benyon (Brampton Beavers), Ian Nicol (Toronto Scottish), Jim McCann (Niagara Rugby Referees Society), and Heather Ambrose (Balmy Beach RFC) are the inductees.

ONTARIO MAKES ITS MARK

Monika Lalewicz and Kirill Sinitsyn, both of Mississauga, have been named the Ontario Tennis Association's players of the month.

Lalewicz completed her summer season by winning the Canada Summer Games team gold medal.

That was accomplished playing in the final mixed doubles match with partner Milan Pokrajac.

She also took two gold medals at the under-16 outdoor nationals in the singles and doubles categories.

Sinitsyn also had a successful summer and fall season. At the under-18 nationals, he took third place in the singles event.

Also on the local tennis front, the $10,000 F1 Futures tournament will be held today through Nov. 6.

Among the Ontario players taking part are Davis Cup squad member Rob Steckley of Toronto, the tournament's No. 2 seed, and Peter Polansky of Thornhill, one of Canada's top juniors.

Polansky rose to No. 55 in the world junior rankings, capturing two ITF junior titles.
