History wins again.

California Chrome’s bid for a Triple Crown fell flat in the Belmont Park stretch on Saturday as the Kentucky Derby and Preakness champ could do no better than a dead-heat for fourth in the final jewel.

Tonalist, a 9-1 outsider, was the spoiler in this year’s Belmont Stakes, surging in the stretch to spoil the afternoon in front of a crowd of 100,000-plus at the Long Island track.

“He was a little tired,” jockey Victor Espinoza said. “When I turned him for home, I waited for the kick he had (in previous races) and today he was a little bit flat.”

The crushing defeat for the California-bred chestnut kept the Triple Crown roster to 11 winners and none since Affirmed in 1978.

“I thought he was gaining ground, but he didn’t have it in him apparently,” said co-owner Steve Coburn.
