The Saskatoon Public School Board has passed a motion to "respectfully retire" the sports team name Redmen from one of its schools.

The Bedford Road Collegiate sports teams have been known as the Redmen since the 1923 football season, when the team wore red pants and red shirts, while their rivals at Nutana Collegiate wore blue uniforms, becoming known as the Blues.

In the early 1960s, the school linked the name Redmen with a logo that referenced Natives.

A report by board chair Ray Morrison and trustee Vernon Linklater said the issue surrounding the use of the Redmen name and logo "has been a complex issue that has polarized the community" but "the board believes that it is time to try to move forward in a manner that respects the many shared perspectives."

The Redmen name will be retired after this school year and a new one will be in place in the fall.

The board did not say how it would go about coming up with a new name for its teams.

A Twitter account for the school called @RedmenUpdates responded after the board's decision by telling students to "keep your spirits high and wear red" on Wednesday.

On the school board's Facebook page, a couple of people said they were disappointed in the decision.

"No attempt was made to reach out to groups who were in support of the Redmen name at all. Very disappointed that this decision was made," one user wrote.

But others agreed with the board.

"The right decision was made tonight and I am so grateful I was able to be there to witness such an exciting announcement," another user wrote.

This type of discussion is not new to sports teams.

In recent years, professional sports franchises -- namely the NFL's Washington Redskins and MLB's Cleveland Indians -- have come under fire for so-called offensive nicknames.

Both teams have stuck to their guns, however, refusing to dramatically alter their names, logos or uniforms.
