The best days can always get better.

Veteran Toronto Sun sports columnist Steve Simmons has always said his “favourite day of the year” comes when he gets to attend the Sports Media Canada Achievement Awards luncheon.

This year the event was even more special for Simmons as he received the 2013 Sports Media Canada George Gross Award for Outstanding Sportswriting.

Simmons said news that he won the award brought tears to his eyes.

“Crying because when you do what I do, say what is on your mind, take stands that aren’t popular, take on stories that others would rather shy away from, you become in nicer terms than my wife put it, a polarizing figure,” Simmons told the crowd at the awards ceremony, held in a ballroom at the Royal York Hotel.
