Defending Giro d'Italia champion Ryder Hesjedal of Canada pedalled himself into the hunt for the 2013 title Friday.

Hesjedal, a Victoria, B.C., native riding for the Garmin-Sharp team, finished 10th in the seventh stage, when ended at Pescara, Italy, to jump into third place overall and well within striking distance of leader Benat Intxausti of Spain. Hesjedal is just eight seconds behind Intxausti.

Australian Adam Hansen of Lotto Belisol won the stage, crossing the line more than a minute ahead of Enrico Battaglin of Italy.

A crash five kilometres from the finish knocked England's Bradley Wiggins out of the top 20.

Cadel Evans of Australia, the 2011 Tour de France winner, finished sixth in the seventh stage to sit sixth in the overall standings, 16 seconds behind Intxausti.
