Ryder Hesjedal is slowly making his way up the leaderboard at the Giro d'Italia.

On Tuesday, the defending champion from Victoria moved up to fifth, sitting 34 seconds behind race leader Lucal Paolini of Italy.

Enrico Battaglin won the 246km fourth stage, while Britain's Bradley Wiggins lost time and fell from second to sixth overall.

Hesjedal finished the stage safely after a crash involving Juan Manuel Garate, Cristiano Salerno and Laurent Pichon held up many riders.
