It was a third place finish for Canadian cyclist Ryder Hesjedal at the Giro d'Italia's third stage Monday.

However, it was Italy's Luca Paolini who launched a late attack to win the stage and snatched the overall leader's pink jersey at the end of an eventful ride, the first road race following a circuit race in Naples and a team time trial during the second stage.

Hesjedal, riding for Garmin-Sharp, currently sits seventh, 34 seconds behind Paolini.

Tuesday's stage, at 246 km, is one of the longest of the race.
