WORST SPORTS INJURIES IN HISTORY

March 31, 2013: Reserve guard Kevin Ware broke his lower right leg in a gruesome-looking injury in the first half, but the Cardinals rallied to defeat second-seeded Duke 85-63 in the Midwest Regional final Sunday at Lucas Oil Stadium and advance to the Final Four. Ware jumped out to contest a 3-pointer with 6:33 left in the first half and snapped the leg when he landed. He was taken off the court on a stretcher and was taken to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. Teammates were shaken, and the injury led to a lengthy stoppage in play.



April 22, 2011: One of Major League Soccer’s most promising young attackers is carted off the pitch. The victim of a devastating tackle from Colorado’s Brian Mullan, Seattle Sounders Steve Zakuani can only watch as his leg dangles in the air.



May 6, 2012: During the 2012 NBA playoffs, New York Knicks guard Baron Davis tears his ACL and MCL while watching his knee completely rearrange.



Jan. 3, 2003: During the 2003 Fiesta Bowl, Miami running back Willis MaGahee has his knee blown up by Ohio State’s Will Allen.



March 22, 1989: Considered one of the most terrifying moments in NHL history, Buffalo Sabres goalie Clint Malarchuk is rushed from the ice after severing his throat.



Date unknown: A horrendous leg fracture all too familiar to those who follow MMA. Worse, his competitor appears to taunt his injured opposition.



Oct. 22, 1999: Swedish international Henrik Larsson suffered a freak injury when his leg got tangled with a Lyon player’s, snapping the Celtic forward’s shin during a UEFA Cup match.



March 10, 2006: In an injury more akin to a fun house, Villanova’s Allan Ray his poked in the eye so forcefully it appears to exit the socket. While the video is a bit freaky, it was later determined that Ray’s eyelid had simply slipped behind his eye. Still weird.



Nov. 18, 1985: The day Joe Theismann’s career ended on an unfortunate sack by New York Giants linebackers Lawrence Taylor and Harry Carson, one of the most shocking incidents in the history of the NFL.



Feb. 10, 2008: Richard Zednik’s horrifying neck injury had fans in Buffalo flashing back to Malarchuk’s life-threatening injury in 1989. Zednik returned for the Florida Panthers the following season.
