New Zealand cricketer Jesse Ryder is in serious condition after being severely beaten outside a bar in Christchurch, New Zealand.

The 28-year-old suffered serious head injuries that placed him in the intensive care unit at Christchurch Hospital.

Four men are alleged to have participated in the assault, according to New Zealand News 3.

Local authorities say they are still investigating the incident, which spilled over into a McDonald’s parking lot.

“We are still piecing together what took place and speaking to witnesses to understand how this incident unfolded,” detective senior sergeant Brian Archer said. “It is early days yet and we have some work to do to establish exactly what happened.”

A witness told Fairfax Media in New Zealand that Ryder was covered in blood.

“Four dudes were just laying into him and absolutely smashing him on the ground,” the witness said. “His shirt was ripped and they were kicking him and punching him while he was down.”

Police are reviewing video surveillance cameras from the area.

Ryder was due to fly out to Delhi, India, to play in the Indian Premier League after being acquired by the Delhi Daredevils at a player auction in February.

Ryder is currently on the roster of the first-class cricket squad, the Wellington Firebirds. He has also dresses for the national team.
