A screen grab taken from Garrett McNamara's documentary shows the American appearing to ride a monster wave.

American surfer Garrett McNamara is reportedly the first person to ever ride a 100-foot wave.

If verified, the Hawaii-native would shatter the record he set last May off the coast of Portugal when he caught a 78-foot monster.

An independent panel of wave enthusiasts and photography professionals will examine the evidence, which includes video, to confirm the height of the swell.

In a clip from a documentary chronicling the current record-holder’s big wave experience, McNamara is seen being towed towards the 100-foot monster before appearing to catch it at just the right time.

The waves off the central Iberian coast build to extreme heights due to an underwater canyon located near Nazaré, Portugal.
