Charles Hamelin skates to gold in China short-track event

Charles Hamelin skated to a gold medal and his girlfriend, Marianne St. Gelais, got a bronze during the World Cup short-track stop Sunday in Shanghai, China.

Hamelin, of Sainte-Julie, Que., won his seventh medal of the season by finishing first in the men's 500 metres. He beat Vladimir Grigorov of Russia by three-hundredths of a second for his 19th career World Cup win.

St. Gelais, of Saint-Felicien, Que. won the bronze medal in the women's 500m after falling in the final. Jessica Gregg of Edmonton was fourth.

Charles Hamelin teamed up with his brother, Francois, Guillaume Bastille of Riviere-du-Loup, Que., and Michael Gilday of Yellowknife to win the bronze medal in the men's relay. The Canadian team was fourth in the women's relay.

h while Germany again grabbed the gold medal.
