Diver Alexandre Despatie confirmed Tuesday he suffered a mild concussion when his head hit the springboard during training last week in Spain.

Despatie, 27, needed surgery to close a 10-centimetre cut on his forehead stemming from the accident. But the native of Laval, Que., was believed to be concussion-free.

Since returning home on the weekend, doctors have told him he had a mild concussion.

"But it's really going very well," Despatie said in an audio statement.

Despatie has to stay out of the pool until the cut heals but said he hopes to resume training by the end of next week.

He hopes to be ready to compete in three-metre springboard at the London Olympics.
