Alexandre Despatie and Reuben Ross sewed up a spot for Canada in the men's three-metre synchro event at the London Olympics Monday.

Despatie, from Laval, Que., and Ross, of Regina, finished fifth in the event at the World Cup diving event at the new Aquatics Centre that will be used in the Olympics this summer. The Canadians finished with 417.42 points, well back of the gold-medal winning Chinese duo of Qin Kai and Luo Yutong.

"I am relieved and pleased," three-time Olympian Despatie said. "The goal here was not to win a medal but get in the top eight. It wasn't an easy task."

In the women's 10-metre preliminaries, Meaghan Benfeito of Montreal was fifth and Roseline Filion of Laval ninth. Canada is already assured of two spots in the event at the Olympics.
