NOME, Ark. -- John Baker captured the Iditarod sled dog race in record fashion, finishing the 1,150-mile trek from Anchorage to Nome on Tuesday in a record time of eight days, 18 hours and 46 minutes.
The old mark was eight days, 22 hours and 46 minutes, set in 2002 by four-time winner Martin Buser.
Baker won the Iditarod for the first time after posting 11 top-10 finishes since his first race in 1996. He was fifth last year and finished third in both 2002 and 2009.
