UBC takes second look at joining NCAA
By BOB MACKIN, QMI Agency
VANCOUVER - University of British Columbia's athletic director said he is waiting for UBC president Stephen Toope to decide in mid-April whether the Thunderbirds will fly into the NCAA.
Bob Philip said Tuesday that Toope could enable UBC to apply by June 1 to join Burnaby, B.C.'s Simon Fraser University in Division 2 of the top college sports circuit on the continent. Even if NCAA approved UBC in August, it could take until 2013 before UBC teams switch leagues.
“(Great Northwest Athletic Conference) would like to know if we’re coming or not because they’ve got to get us into their schedules,” Philip told QMI Agency. “The decision as to whether we would have to leave after one year or two years has not been made either. If we decide to go we’ll meet with Canada West (conference) to look at how we’re going to get extricated.”
After public hearings and a detailed study, UBC decided in 2009 to stay in Canadian Interuniversity Sport.
