By Sports Network

Los Angeles, CA - Jack LaLanne, the famed fitness expert, died at his California home on Sunday at the age of 96.

LaLanne, according to the Los Angeles Times, passed away of respiratory failure due to pneumonia.

Best known for his stunts later in life, LaLanne once swam from Alcatraz Island to Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco -- handcuffed, shackled and towing a boat -- when he was 60 years old.

He published numerous books on fitness and had a television show dedicated to the topic for over three decades.
