VICTORIA — It’s been seven long years since Contrecoeur, Que., figure skater Cynthia Phaneuf won the Canadian senior women’s title.

She’s now on the verge of winning it again.

Phaneuf, 22, clapped her hands in celebration after performing her Spanish-music themed short program, and the judges awarded her a score of 60.77 points for first place heading into Saturday’s free skate.

Vaughan skater Alexandra Najarro, 17, had a marvellous short program, scoring a personal best 52.12 points, to place second.

Jessica Dube, a three-time Canadian champion in pairs, finished fifth, after falling attempting a triple Salchow. She is competing in singles as her pairs’ partner, Bryce Davison, is out with an injured knee.

The women’s competition is wide open in the absence of Olympic bronze medallist Joannie Rochette.
