Gough slides to bronze in Calgary

Canada’s Amy Gough won a bronze medal during the World Cup skeleton event Thursday in Calgary.

The Abbotsford, B.C. native finished third with a combined run of one minute, 56.89 seconds to beat out teammate Melissa Hollingsworth of Eckville, Alta. by an eyelash. Hollingsworth was fourth in 1:56.98 while Sarah Reid of Calgary was seventh in 1:57.86.

Anja Huber of Germany won the gold medal in 1:55.84 while Shelley Rudman of Great Britain took the silver, just over three-quarters of the second behind.

The Canadian men didn’t have the same level of success.

Olympic champ Jon Montgomery of Russell, Man., finished 11th in 1:54.00 while teammates John Fairbairn of Calgary was 12th and Michael Douglas of Toronto was 13th.

Latvia’s Martins Dukurs slid to the gold medal in 1:52.14. Alexander Tretiakov of Russia was second and Kristian Bromley of Great Britain was third.
