Track and field events are making the leap to York University for the 2015 Pan Am Games.

Rugby, planned for Fletcher’s Fields in Markham, will also move to the York University Keele campus with the original site serving for training.

Track and field was to have been hosted in a Hamilton stadium which will offer more soccer instead — about 30 to 40 matches.

The final location of that Hamilton stadium — the cause of a heated tug-of-words between the local council and the Tiger Cats — was still under discussion Monday.

Toronto 2015 officials are doing a second closer look at proposed venues for the upcoming games so some sports are on the move.

Ian Troop, CEO of Toronto 2015, says in statement that grouping tennis, rugby and Pan and Parapan track and field at the York University campus in North York will create an enduring sports legacy for the local community and improve the operational efficiency of the event.

“The York cluster is an all-round benefit to the delivery of the Games,” Troop says.

The final venue plan goes before the Toronto 2015 board next month.

York University, already a venue for tennis at the Toronto 2015 Pan/Parapan American Games, is in discussions with organizers regarding the construction of a stadium on its Keele campus that would host track & field events during the Games.

York University has signed a letter of intent to allow the construction of a track and field facility that meets International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) standards.

The letter of intent says the university and games organizers may discuss hosting additional Pan Am events at the Keele campus.
