Skier retires, plans to marry goalie

Two-time Olympian Brigitte Acton has a busy schedule ahead of her, and it hasn't left any room for skiing.

Acton, who placed 17th in the slalom at the 2010 Olympics, is retiring from the Canadian Alpine Ski Team, it was announced Wednesday.

She plans to get married next month in Aspen, Colo., to fiancée Mike Smith, a Tampa Bay Lightning goaltender.

Acton, a 24-year-old native of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., then plans to go back to school in the fall.

“I love what skiing has brought me,” said Acton, whose leadership skills provided a boost to the women’s technical team. “This was a difficult decision but one where I felt it was the right time.”

Acton comes from a skiing family. Her parents, Gordon and Diane (Pratte) Acton, are national team alumni as is her sister ,Lise-Marie Acton, uncles Raymond and Michel Pratte as well as aunt Claude Pratte.
