Bettors foresaw a champ

Queen's Plate bettors weren't fooled by the morning line for yesterday's Queen's Plate and all but ignored the hype surrounding the highly touted pair of fillies.

Instead, they made Eye of the Leopard a resounding 2-1 favourite in the field of 13 Canadian-foaled 3-year-olds and rewarded themselves at the windows with a $6.70 payoff.

Milwaukee Appeal, who finished a solid third, was given the tag of horse to beat when she was tabbed as the 3-1 morning-line pick following Thursday's post position draw. Instead, she was sent off at odds of 4-1 as bettors clearly favoured the pedigree of Eye of the Leopard to the filly's win in the Woodbine Oaks.

It was a busy day at the windows as well, as this year's Plate-day card was heaviest bet in years. A total of $5,779,982 was wagered on the 11-race card. For the Plate itself, $1,843,587 was invested, an increase of almost $140,000 from a year ago.
