History buffs may get all misty-eyed over the 150th anniversary of the Queen's Plate on Sunday.
Add three more zeroes to that number and bettors will like what they see even more.
The Woodbine Entertainment Group is giving gamblers a big boost by putting $150,000 into the Pick Six pool for Sunday's card, an exotic wager in which bettors are required to pick the winner of six consecutive races, including the Plate.
The company will announce further details today, but the plan is to inject $150,000 into the betting pool for the Pick Six on Sundays only for the remainder of the thoroughbred meet. The multi-race bet is extremely popular with gamblers looking to make a big score but will be even more so with such a generous head start in the pool.
Track officials are hoping the added money will attract the attention of gamblers not only in Canada but in U.S. locations that offer wagering on the Woodbine product. The expectation, then, is that foreign bettors will become more familiar with the Woodbine product which will help add to the overall handle.
The Plate itself is shaping up as a solid betting race with a field of 14 expected, including two fillies. That pair -- Tasty Temptation and Woodbine Oaks winner Milwaukee Appeal -- are expected to vie for favourite status along with Plate Trial winner Eye Of The Leopard.
Post positions for the 11/4-mile opening jewel of the Canadian Triple Crown will be determined on Thursday with the help of celebrity drawmaster Gordie Howe.
