Poppino barrels to victory

Tana Poppino needed to make a phone call.

The call was to her husband, Marty, to let him know she'd just won the Calgary Stampede's barrel racing $100,000 bonus round.

The talented cowgirl from Big Cabin, Okla. had reluctantly called home earlier in the day, using her cell phone. Because she's on an American plan, she gets dinged pretty heavily with roaming charges for international calls.

But she wasn't too worried about the charges of her next call.

"I think we can afford it now," she giggled, referencing the $107,000 she'd earned in five days of competition.

Poppino and her horse, Amigo, saved the best they had for last, running a 17.42-second cloverleaf pattern, their best in six attempts.

"That's the fastest run we've clocked all week," said Poppino, who'll turn 34 next week.

Once they tip-toed around the first barrel, they went for broke but ended up tickling the third. It stayed up.
