Spruce Meadows brings international competition to Calgary sports fans and the world to the stomachs of food lovers.

Known the world over for being a premier show jumping venue, Spruce Meadows takes as much care when pleasing the palette as it does in providing good sport, said venue spokesman Ian Allison.

The key lies in fostering and maintaining a reputation for quality food that brings the world to the venue, he said.

"You can eat your way around the world here," said Allison. "It is definitely not midway fare."

Although restaurants and concessions pepper the grounds and pavilions all over Spruce Meadows, no area best exemplifies the international cuisines that add a tasty quality to the venue than Flavours of the World, a selection of kiosks located at the lower plaza, said Spruce Meadows manager of hosting venues Tyler Osborn.

"Flavours of the World specializes in cuisines of all the countries represented here at Spruce Meadows," he said.

Greek cuisine can be found at the plaza's Souvlaki Hut, spices inhabit the Mexican Cantina, while fish and chips represent England and the Austrian Schnitzel Haus brings the Alps to the Prairies.

With more than seven different cuts of meat, such as lamb, prime rib, pork loin and chicken, Churrascaria Authentic Brazilian Barbecue is also becoming a quick public favourite, said Osborn.

The stop serves up cuts roasted on rotating swords over open flames and cut and served for all-you-can-eat buffets.

"Spruce Meadows is always about the international flavour -- from the competition, to the decor, to the staff and all the languages spoken around here," said Osborn.

It takes more than 50 cooks and chefs, augmented by hundreds of front-line staff, to feeds the thousands of spectators every day, said Osborn.
