Max Fortmuller needed to hit the pay window last night.

He's got some dental work to pay for.

The DeWinton bullrider busted a tooth on a bull's back last week at Airdrie.

"It was a bad mental mistake on my part," Fortmuller said through a set of makeshift braces.

Fortmuller and Zane Lambert (Westbourne, Man.) know they're getting a cheque. They just don't know what the amount will be.

The pair finished atop the leaderboard with identical scores of 170.5 on two head on Night 1 of the 8th Annual Ranchman's Renegades Bullbustin'.

Fortmuller rode Schellenberg's Ringo for an 83 in the long round before spurring out an 87.5 aboard Franklin's Ruffle Up in the six-man short go.

"The first one was a bull I never knew but everybody said he was a good draw," Fortmuller said. "There weren't many tricks to him. He just went out and spun and then it was all in my court.

"And Rufflr Up doesn't look like a bull that would buck. He looks like a Herford. But he kicks over his head every time and comes around. He faked right and then came back left and I was out of position but I got back over him and hung on for the whistle."

Fortmuller and Lambert will have to sit and wait to see what happens tonight before they're handed a cheque.

"I'm sure it'll place but you never know," Fortmuller said. "There's a lot of good guys comin' tomorrow and they're just as likely to ride two as we were."

Lambert rode Franklin's tanned left spinner Smack That for 83 points in the long round before spurring Schellenberg's Hostage Taker for an 87.5 in the championship round.

"That last one, he was a good bull," Lambert said. "You can't ask for anything better than that.

"He jumped out there, kind of stumbled and then turned into my hand. That usually means a guy can kick loose and have a little fun.

"Some guys ride that way and some guys don't. For me, it was right into my office."

Lambert said he didn't know where he'll end up by the end of tonight's round.

"It'll stand up for something," he said. "For how much, I don't know.

"I know they'll ride a few tomorrow. There's a few good guys up."

Lambert said he's nickel and diming his way around and hopes a big cheque from the Cody Snyder-produced event will kickstart bigger and better things.

"I've been to a bunch. This is the hardest I've ever went. I've gone to all these bullridings and I haven't missed any.

"I've just been whacking away at it. Nothing big, I haven't won at any of the big events. But hopefully this'll turn it around for me this summer and I'll start ridin'."
