Running backs in Saskatoon

Ontario and British Columbia may be wastelands for university football where big crowds are measured in the 100s, but the same can't be said for the Prairies, the Atlantic Provinces and Quebec.

Tomorrow, The Score will be broadcasting the Vanier Cup from Saskatoon -- a game that will see the Saskatchewan Huskies take on Laval Rouge et Or.

It should be an interesting take on how many in the rest of Canada will tune in. Kickoff is at 2 p.m.

IRISH TEST

The fate of the U.S. college football championship lineup will be decided later tomorrow with an 8 p.m. start on ABC at Los Angeles Coliseum with a game between No. 3 ranked USC and No. 5 Notre Dame.

It may be the only time this century that No. 2 ranked Michigan Wolverine fans will be rooting for the Irish.

If Notre Dame beats USC it will almost automatically trigger a Michigan rematch with No. 1 Ohio State for all the marbles.

LADIES FIRST

Props to Jennifer Hedger for her performance subbing for Michael Landsberg on TSN's Off The Record this past week.

It was a first to have a woman serving as host of the daily stable of usually testosterone-loaded gab-festers and Hedger handled it seamlessly.

Another couple sportscasters who are earning their chops in Canada's biggest and most important media market are Erin Paul at Rogers Sportsnet and Sara Buchan at The Fan 590.

Paul's The Spin segment with CFL legend Doug Flutie a few weeks ago was top notch, and Buchan has an encyclopedic knowledge of motorsports, especially NASCAR -- North America's No. 2 rated televised professional sport -- a fact that has escaped the notice of many in the electronic media.

JUST WONDERING

The weak numbers in the fall BBM book for most of The Fan's slots -- excluding the afternoon drive monster that is Bob McCown -- raise the question of when will the folks at Rogers start greasing the skids on many of its made-in-Toronto programs for the syndicated variety?

There is a huge number of GTA sports talk junkies who push the button to WGR 550 to get ESPN's Colin Cowherd for their mid-morning fix after Gord Stellick and Don Landry sign off at The Fan.
