And Another Thing

SIMMONS HAS MORE TO SAY ON ...

QB PERSPECTIVE

Damon Allen is truly deserving of all the accolades as he becomes the career leading passer in professional football history. But that mark of longevity doesn't necessarily move him up among the CFL's career greats. On my list, he clearly would rank behind Doug Flutie, Russ Jackson, Jackie Parker, Warren Moon, Dieter Brock and Ron Lancaster.

J.P. SHUFFLE

J.P. Ricciardi leads the major leagues in only one category -- excuses. It doesn't seem to matter how much he's allowed to spend, he claims it's never enough. The Blue Jays increased payroll by $26 million this season: For that, they might win five more games than a year ago. The Jays aren't hindered by budget as much as by decision making.

HOCKEY SHOCK

Parents will be in for a shock when the minor-hockey season begins shortly. All across Canada, the game is being changed, more in line with NHL rules. This may work with pro players and pro referees but in exhibitions so far, the parade to the penalty box has been non-stop. Whether parents and players adapt --and each are being asked to -- will be worth monitoring.
