Title fight may be scrapped

The highly-anticipated title fight between Canadian Georges St. Pierre and UFC welterweight champ Matt Hughes may be off.

The Sun has learned a groin injury may force St. Pierre to cancel the fight set for Sept. 23 at the Arrowhead Pond in Anaheim, Calif.

"We hope to make an announcement tomorrow whether Georges will be able to fight on September 23," his manager Stephane Patry said yesterday.

St. Pierre, Canada's biggest mixed-martial arts star, hasn't lost a fight since the last time he stepped into the octagon with Hughes nearly two years ago.

In their October 2004 scrap, St. Pierre made a respectable showing against the powerful veteran only to fall victim to a Hughes armbar with one second left in the first round.

In recent interviews, the 25-year-old Montrealer said he had matured since his first fight with Hughes.

He told Sun Media recently: "Matt Hughes is beatable and I will prove it in September."

That plan may now have to wait.
