Treasure trove

Jim Taylor knew he'd found a treasure when he discovered boxes of Jim Coleman's writings. But even he was surprised by how big it was.

"I knew him from the mid-'60s and I knew he was good, but until I found his old columns I had no idea how good he was.

"This guy used the language beautifully.

"I'd love to get this into libraries and schools. And I'd love to get it into journalism schools. It should be available for people to go back and see it how it was."

How it was, was the days before television, the days of afternoon deadlines, the days when sportswriters needed to provide the colour.

Coleman - with his cigars, his suits, his outgoing nature and his love of horsetracks - often provided rainbows of colour.
