London and area lawn bowlers were a significant force last week as Ontario teams won five of the six categories at the Canadian lawn bowls championships held at venues in Kitchener and Woodstock.

Kevin Jones of London's Elmwood club won gold in singles while Ryan Bester and his father Bob, a Hanover duo, captured the pairs title.

The Tilbury pair of Bryan Theoret and Terry Little took bronze. Maureen Thompson of London's Fairmont club and Carol Carter from Seaforth teamed to take gold in the women's pairs.

"It was a successful championship," said Don Caswell of London, Bowls Canada national team committee chairperson.

"All the Ontario (winning) teams except the women's pairs were silver medallists in Ontario," Caswell noted.

Ontario had two entries in each category.

The men's fours team of Steve McKerihen, Dave Anderson, John Devonshire and Fred Wallbank of Toronto took gold over Manitoba while the women's fours of Auriel Daniell, Mary White, Linda Butler and Dee Murray of Oshawa finished second to Saskatchewan.

Shirley Ko of Toronto took the women's singles title over B.C.
