HARBIN, China (CP) -- Shannon Rempel of Winnipeg picked up her first career World Cup medal Saturday, taking silver in the women's 1,000 metres at the second long track speed skating event of the season for sprinters.

Rempel, competing in only her fourth World Cup event of the past two seasons, clocked one minute 18.48 seconds, just back of the 1:18.16 posted by Anzhelika Kotyuga of Belarus.

Chiara Simionato of Italy was third in 1:18.60.

On the men's side, Jeremy Wotherspoon of Red Deer, Alta., picked up the 500-metre bronze for his third medal in three races.

Wotherspoon's time of 35.60 left him back of the 35.38 posted by Pekka Koskela of Finland and the 35.53 put up by Joji Kato of Japan.

Wotherspoon was also eighth in the men's 1,000.
