CALGARY - The recommendation to drop wrestling from the 2020 Olympic Games has blindsided Canadian officials and athletes.

Wrestling Canada President Don Ryan said he thought it was a joke when he woke up to messages Tuesday morning alluding to the International Olympic Committee's (IOC) plan to remove the sport.

"It just came as a complete surprise," said Ryan in a teleconference Tuesday afternoon.

"We're hoping the IOC will not ratify this at the meeting coming up."
