The honours just keep on coming for the Jennifer Jones team.
The Olympic gold-medal-winning curling rink, who returned to Winnipeg late Monday night to a cheering crowd of approximately 300 people, will have a street named after them on an honourary basis. Regal Avenue, the street where the St. Vital Curling Club is located, will also be known as Honourary Team Jones Way.
“Winnipeggers have always been extremely supportive of Team Jones and are very proud of the team’s record-breaking Olympic achievement,” said Mayor Sam Katz, who greeted the team at the airport on Monday night. “All of the members of the team are ambassadors for Winnipeg and the sport of curling and it is fitting to honour them with Team Jones Way.”
The honourary street designations allow the city to keep the current street name, saving the associated expenses that come for both the city and residents with changing addresses, while still honouring the team.
