A U.S. skier has contracted a case of puppy love in Sochi.

Amid reports of countless stray dogs in the Olympic host city – and fears they would be killed by authorities – American Gus Kenworthy is trying to spare a few from death.

Kenworthy posted to Twitter a picture of himself holding a cute black-and-white puppy with the caption: “Oh my glob, look who I just found.”

He also posted a picture of himself holding a half-dozen puppies: “Puppy love is real to puppies,” he wrote.

He then added: “I’ve lined up kennels (for) the pups and made vaccination appointments. Doing all I can to bring them home w/me!”

Kenworthy’s concern for the puppies is well-founded.

Earlier this week, a pest-control company with a long history in Sochi said it had been contracted to exterminate more stray dogs during the Games.

Alexei Sorokin told the Associated Press his firm would be “catching and disposing” of dogs, though he wouldn’t say where the carcasses would be disposed.
