WINNIPEG - This isn’t the way you expected Jon Montgomery to go out.

The redheaded skeleton racer from Russell, Man., who provided the Vancouver Games with its signature moment, is ready to sign off on his Olympic career.

Unable to defend his Olympic title after failing to qualify for Sochi, the auctioneer-turned-gold medalist-turned TV personality says he’s probably done.

“I don’t think I’m going to commit another four years of my body and my health to this sport,” Montgomery told the Winnipeg Sun, Tuesday. “I haven’t quite determined what this means in terms of my career in skeleton racing. But I don’t see myself being in Pyeongchang, no.”

Perhaps that’s not a shock. Montgomery will be 38, after all, for the next Winter Games in South Korea.

But many Canadians who only follow the sport once every four years will be surprised he’s not at the start line in Sochi.
