There are no body checks in figure skating, but there are reality checks, and world champion Patrick Chan was levelled by one on Friday.

Last month at the Eric Bompard Trophy Grand Prix in Paris, the three-time defending world champion smashed his overall world record by winning the competition with 295.27 points. He also bettered the world records in the free-skate and short programs.

And so heading into this week's Grand Prix Final in Fukuoka, Japan, the 22-year-old skater from Toronto had every reason to believe that things would go smashingly in his final international event prior to February's Sochi Olympics.
