When the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics begins, Sidney Crosby will probably be heading home after a morning skate in preparation for a game that night against the New York Rangers.

That rules him out as the obvious choice to carry the Canadian flag into the Sochi Games.

But it may not rule hockey out entirely. Why not have Hayley Wickenheiser, in her fifth and has-to-be-final Olympics, carrying the Canadian flag? Why not have Canada’s most recognizable sport represented by one of its historical leaders?

A case can certainly be made for figure skater Patrick Chan, bobsledder Kaillie Humphries, short track speed skater Charles Hamelin, and maybe now three-time Olympian skier, Erik Guay, to receive the honour of carrying the flag. All of them are deserving by what they have accomplished in the past and what they might just accomplish in Sochi.

There are no shortage of quality candidates.
