SOCHI - During Canada’s official welcome to the XXII Winter Olympic Games Wednesday evening, the sun setting over the Black Sea burst through some clouds and focused its golden light right on the Maple Leaf as it unfurled in the breeze.

O Canada floated in the air.

“I’ll tell you: the IOC flag went up and I thought, ‘That’s pretty good,’” said Canadian Olympic Team chef de mission Steve Podborski. “When the Canadian flag went up, the sun is glaring on it, it blows out and you can see the Maple Leaf and I’m thinking, ‘I’m sure we’re going to hear more of that.’ It was really, really great.”

The expectations are high once again at these Olympic Games as Canada looks to defend the top step of the podium after winning the most gold medals four years ago in Vancouver.
