Both Manitoba's Jeff Stoughton and Mike McEwen suffered losses on the opening draw of the Tim Hortons Roar of the Rings Canadian Curling Trials on Sunday night.

Northern Ontario's reigning Canadian champion Brad Jacobs beat Stoughton 7-4 in a rematch of the Brier final before 10,214 fans at the MTS Centre.

Alberta's Olympic gold medallist Kevin Martin clipped McEwen 5-3.

In the other games, B.C.'s John Morris surprised Ontario's former world champion Glenn Howard and Ontario's John Epping upset Alberta's former world champion Kevin Koe 9-8.
