ARLINGTON, VA. - Patrick Kane had to do a double-take.

Sitting in a Swiss restaurant last winter having breakfast, a familiar face in a Team USA jacket walked by — skis over his shoulder — and the Chicago Blackhawks star ran out on the street for a chat.

The tourist in question was out-of-work coach Ron Wilson, a hockey man who had a profound effect on Kane for the short time they were connected.

Wilson may not have had much success as coach of the Maple Leafs, but at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, he nearly pulled off a mammoth upset. And the coach’s role in it is not lost on some of the returning veterans.

“I was a big fan,” Kane said this week when asked about Wilson’s role in the silver medal the U.S. collected in heartbreaking fashion, that OT loss to Canada. “I liked him a lot. Even when I see him to this day, he’s fun to talk to.

“He was great for that tournament, a guy not afraid to say what’s on his mind.”
